Employment Information
Routt County Sheriff’s Office is committed to hiring and retaining the highest quality law enforcement staff. As a part of our pursuit for excellence we offer a competitive salary and benefits program, on-going training, and room for advancement.

Routt County Sheriff’s Office is housed in a four million dollar facility that includes the Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center. Next door to the Sheriff’s Office is the new 14 million dollar Justice Center, which will be completed in the fall of 2007. Patrol Deputies are sworn Deputy Sheriffs and require P.O.S.T. certification. P.O.S.T. certification is preferred for Detention Deputies, but not required. We will train the right people. Civilians may be hired to perform a limited job description in the Detention Center.

Our staff consists of the following personnel:
• Sheriff
• Undersheriff
• 1 Patrol Lieutenant
• 2 Patrol Sergeants
• 12 Patrol Deputies
• 1 Civil Deputy
• 1 Animal Control Officer
• 3 Clerical Staff
• 3 Detentions Sergeants
• 20 Detentions Deputies
• 2 Investigators
• 2 Cooks

The starting salary for a deputy is $44,387. Our optional benefits package includes a standard health insurance policy paid by the county, for the family, with a minimal employee premium contribution. Dental and vision insurance is also available. The retirement plan vests after five years of employment and the county contributes matching funds (up to six percent) after one year.

Routt County Sheriff’s Office will supply full uniforms for deputies. Deputies must purchase their own handguns. Our duty handgun is the 1911A1 (Colt, Kimber, Springfield, etc.) in .45 caliber ACP, Sig Sauer or the Glock 21, 30, 22, or 23.

The hiring process is rigorous. Routt County Sheriff’s Office strives to be the best small sheriff’s office in Colorado, thereby requiring the best deputies. The process begins with a review of the applicants for height/weight requirements and criminal history. The first day of evaluation starts with a written test and a report writing exercise. Depending on weather conditions, a physical fitness test may be given. The applicants who have passed the morning tests will participate in an oral board. The selected applicants will then be subject to a background investigation which will include, but not be limited to, their driving record, previous employers, and criminal history. An applicant selected for employee consideration will be offered a position contingent upon passing polygraph and psychological examinations.

As a member of the Routt County Sheriff’s Office you would be a part of a small, rural community on the west side of the Continental Divide in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Our county is approximately 70 by 90 miles and the terrain varies from sagebrush pasture to 12,000 foot mountain peaks, encompassing 2,231 square miles. The Steamboat Ski and Resort Area is four miles from the Routt County Sheriff’s Office, and last year we hosted over one million skiers. The higher elevations receive about 25 feet of snow each year.
